Jewish Menorah History

The seven-branched candelabrum that we call the Jewish menorah was one of the sacred vessels of the Holy Temple, and a magnificent work of art. Its design, as commanded in the Book of Exodus, was extraordinary -- as was the Divinely appointed manner of its construction. For the large menorah was not to be assembled from pieces, but was actually beaten from a single block of solid gold.

The Oneness of the Menorah

Our Sages have noted that the oneness of the Menorah's construction symbolizes the essential unity of the Jewish people. Just as the Menorah has seven branches and seven separate lamps, there are numerous types of Jews. We differ in many ways -- in our customs, our cultural milieu, our temperament. Yet in our basic "substance," in our spiritual essence, we are one.

The Hanukkah menorah has eight branches and menorah candles that we use to celebrate the Festival of Light for eight days.

Become a Jewish Menorah!

The doing is the ultimate.
Make yourself into a menorah.
How? Take a hammer and start pounding.
The Jewish menorah in the Beit Hamikdash, the Holy Temple
was formed from one lump of gold.
The branches, cups and decorations were all formed
from beating and refining that lump.

So should we do with our middot;
our emotions and personality.
Buy making our will G-d’s will
we shape ourselves into a divine luminary.
Just as the flame leaps to return to its source
so should we leap to unify with our source.
