Kosher Diet Wisdom
A Kosher Diet for a Godly Soul

Kosher Diet Blessing

Kosher Definition

What is kosher?
A definition of kosher is the Hebrew word meaning “fit.”
The Torah lays down guidelines for a kosher diet
- what’s fit or kosher for a Jew to eat — and what’s not.

-Rabbi Mendy Hecht-

A Kosher Diet Refines Us
Physically and Spiritually

*One of the reasons certain foods are prohibited
is that the food we eat becomes part of our physical bodies,
transformed into our flesh and blood.
The Torah prohibits us from ingesting certain foods
to protect our bodies from their negative influence.
Keeping kosher enables a Jew to avoid
the spiritually harmful effect of these non-kosher substances.

Eating kosher refines our bodies and helps to make us
better able to receive a higher level of Godliness.

There was a time when people used to brush aside
the laws of keeping kosher as outdated,
food storage and production being much more sanitary
than in former years. But the G-d-given commandment
to keep kosher was never dependent upon sanitary conditions.
At one period in history, the extra cleanliness of kosher food
might have been an added benefit of observing this important mitzvah,
but it was never the reason for keeping kosher.

In fact, keeping kosher is in the category of mitzvot known as chukim
-- decrees. We are given no explanation by the Torah or our rabbis
as to why we were given these "decrees."
But, since our Creator knows what's best for us -- which oils,
fluids, fuels, etc. make the mechanics of our soul run the smoothest
-- it is prudent and wise to follow His operating instructions assiduously.

Kosher Food Laws Help Us Serve God

There are certainly many aspects of Kosher rules which are very logical
and contribute to good health. Some examples of kosher laws:
-The prohibition against eating diseased and sickly animals,
-Checking the inner organs to ascertain that the animal is not diseased,
-Not eating meat from animals found dead,
-Checking all sorts of food in order not to ingest bugs and insects.
-Not mixing meat and milk and waiting between eating them

But all these benefits of the kosher food laws are "fringe benefits."

The reason we eat a kosher diet
(or keep any of the Torah's commandments, for that matter)
is because, in His infinite and unknowable wisdom,
the Creator of the World decreed it.

- Rabbi Avraham Arieh Trugman -

Kosher Standards

First of all, Jewish kosher foods are health food for the soul.
Just as there are foods that are friendly to your body
and foods that harm it, so too
there are foods that are soul-friendly
while other foods are not-so-friendly.
According to the Kabala, eating is a process of purification:
When we eat, we separate the coarse material
from the Divine energy in the food.
Everything in the world contains some sort of Divine energy.
But non-kosher foods are too coarse for us to purify by eating.
Rather than providing spiritual energy, once metabolized,
these non kosher foods actually stand in the way and block the flow.

- Tzvi Freeman -

Kosher Rules for Body and Soul

All in all, a person should not be misled to think
that keeping a kosher diet is for health reasons.
Neither does the fact that a food item is kosher
mean that it is necessarily healthy.
We should be encouraged to develop
the most appropriate, G-dly, diet possible
– both for body and soul.

- Baruch Emanuel Erdstein -

A Kosher Diet Heightens
Our Spiritual Awareness

Eating foods that are kosher heighten our spiritual awareness.
We are more in tune with the G-dly soul within ourselves
and G-d's Presence in the world around us.

- Mrs. Dinka Kumer -

Non-kosher foods clog up spiritual 'arteries.'

Non-kosher prohibited foods dull the heart and mind to spirituality.
They make it difficult for a person to grasp spiritual concepts
and block the ability to make proper and holy decisions.

- Mrs. Dinka Kumer -

Give keeping kosher a chance.
You might want to start out slowly,
but once you start to keep kosher,
you won't be able to imagine
any other way to keep your soul fine-tuned.
